The Carlisle side made the mammoth journey to Sheffield on Sunday to play their penultimate league game of the season. The journey was worsened by the unpredictable April weather with snow and high winds hampering the bus and meaning a shortened warm up and quick turnaround once the team arrived at the ground. The weather had more to throw at the team with bitter cold wind and driving rain starting just as the game kicked off.

Both teams played to the conditions and played a close game keeping the ball tight and making hard yards around the fringes of rucks. Carlisle rediscovered a love of mauling and used many a rolling maul to make steady progress up the pitch. It was from line out the team scored their first try, plan A was catch and drive, it didn’t quite go to plan but luckily good footwork by hooker Charlotte Sellars saw her evade the Sheffield defence and score her first try for the Cougars.

Sheffield hit back and scored just before half time taking the game into the break a tight 5 all. The turnaround unfortunately also saw the Carlisle side tire in the conditions, Sheffield exploited this using their strike runners well to suck in the defence before scoring around the outside. Credit to the visitors they never gave up and got on the score board again following a better worked catch and drive from a line out Kathryn Sharpe was able to dot the ball down at the back of the maul.

The final score was 38-12 to Sheffield who were delighted with the result in their final game of the season. The Cougars have 2 games to go with Kendal in the County Cup on Saturday before their final league game against Manchester in 2 weeks time.
